Abandoned on a mountain and grieving a lost baby, Maren Black leaves her wealthy partner to rebuild her life through photography in Paris.
After seven years with Damon Lancaster, heir to a New York fortune, Maren Black is stranded on a freezing summit while he pursues Tessa. That night she suffers a miscarriage and silently resolves to leave. A lake misunderstanding and a stable accident sever the last ties. She flies to Paris where photographer Rafael hires her as an assistant. Her photo series Women in Migration gains recognition and she builds an independent career. Damon follows to Paris seeking reconciliation but finds Maren no longer revolves around him. Tessa spreads rumors that Maren's success came from wealthy connections. Damon publicly admits his infidelity and the harm he caused to clear her name yet she does not return. Maren continues her photography work and supports educational programs for women. Only after achieving real independence does she accept Rafael's love completing her transformation from dependence to self-definition.
