Evan Cole presents his mother's beast egg at the Awakening ceremony in the Lower City. The shell breaks to reveal Alia, a premature ant queen the examiners discard as useless. A blood pact between them awakens her true nature as an S-rank Hive Queen capable of consuming other beasts and mutating a rapidly expanding legion. While privileged rivals train in safety, Evan directs his swarm through three days of brutal hunting. He then dominates the academy trial, single-handedly slaying an S-rank mutant to claim first rank. His victory exposes House Vale's forbidden dark magic and the existence of the Undercity, the entity Cerberus, and the Abyss lord Valhan. During a tide of a million beasts, Evan and Alia achieve Symbiosis, kill Valhan, and secure Upper City citizenship for the Lower City.
